I’ve had a few conversations recently about what a selfish world we’re living in today.

I really don’t know if it’s me that’s changing as I get older, or that the world is changing around me. I suspect it’s a bit of both, and more of the latter.

Screw you all, I’m OK. Screw the poor, the disabled, the elderly or anyone not able to stand up for themselves. Hell, if you can’t afford books, you won’t be allowed to read. It’s endemic and comes from the top, and to be honest, the last government didn’t do enough to reverse this attitude.

It’s a depressing state. I know that not everyone is like this, and indeed that there’s always been selfish people, but it seems to me that the baseline of society has shifted towards ‘screw you’.

People are selfish in the pub, selfish when parking, selfish on planes, selfish with their environment and selfish driving (I’ve experienced a rare near miss there just last week from someone who thought ‘fuck it, I’m going”). Driving often brings out the worst in people, so I suppose it’s only right that’s where we see it the most, but there’s plenty of examples everywhere.

I’ve had a few conversations recently about what a selfish world we’re living in today.
