I&#8217;ve speculated here before about pub closures, costs, and landlords making money without stiffing us too much for the price of a pint. We&#8217;ve discussed it both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/?p=1997\">here<\/a> and over at Come the Revolution more than once. Brownhills Bob has documented pubs <a href=\"http:\/\/brownhillsbob.wordpress.com\/2009\/05\/05\/the-pubs-weve-lost\/\">closing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/brownhillsbob.tumblr.com\/post\/14398294956\">opening<\/a>, and we&#8217;ve all seen more close than open: I stand by what I&#8217;ve said before: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.camra.org.uk\">Real Ale<\/a> is the saviour of the British pub these days, and the only way, it seems, to make money is either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/?p=1997\" title=\"Every little helps?\">do a spoons (or similar)<\/a> or to open a free house like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pubblog\/?p=632\">The Swan<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pubblog\/?p=106\">Lazy Hill<\/a>, free of the drain of a pubco. <\/p>\n<p>We all hate the fact that we&#8217;re now typically paying \u00a32.70-\u00a33.10 for a pint, but publicans have to make money: I overheard one locally saying he could no longer sell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stellaartois.com\/\">Wife Beater<\/a> because he couldn&#8217;t buy it at a price his customers would pay.
