Yesterday was a trip down to Laaaaaandahn<\/strike> London. A branch office of my employer was moving, and I was there to help out with the IT stuff. It was a good job: I’m the person there with the best networking (and specifically Cisco IOS) skills. I’m not an IOS guru by any means, but I know enough.<\/p>\n
BT were onsite fitting a new Meridian phone switch, IP phones, and a Cisco 3750 switch, and connecting up their managed WAN service. The really odd thing about BT is how compartmentalized their engineers are. One guy configures switches, another installs them, for example. <\/p>\n
The result of this is a LAN switch incorrectly configured, and no one from BT who can fix it. They can load on a pre-genrated config, but that’s all. This means that what is about 30 mins work takes *more than a day* because none of the field engineers know how to configure a fairly simple switch. In the end I improved things as much as was needed to get the site working- but I have a nasty feeling I’ll end up finishing the job.<\/p>\n
The bizzare thing is, some of the engineers are really good. I think that there’s about 10% of BT engineers carrying the company. Anyone care to call me a liar? <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
