Everyone’s least favourite billionaire with questionable opinions and attitudes, Elon Musk, bought Twitter. For $44bn, then announced he didn’t want it, and has spent the last few days seemingly systematically destroying it: whether it’s his free-speech agenda<\/a>, or just general arseholery, this seems like a good moment to look at alternatives in case it becomes a bin fire, or indeed vanishes.<\/p>\n

At the current moment, as all the sacked Twitter engineers haven’t yet spun up a startup, Mastodon seems the one. It’s got a few concepts that feel odd to start with.<\/p>\n

First of all, you have to choose an instance, or server to have as your home, because Mastodon is distributed, so you choose one from here<\/a>. This is confusing, if you’re used to a monolithic network like Twitter: the important thing to note is that you don’t need to be on the same instance as people you want to follow, as the servers are federated and talk to one another. The other thing is that the node you choose dictates your name or handle, so I’m @stymaster@mstdn.social, because I picked the mstdn.social node- this is analogous to picking a webmail provider- the provider forms the last part of the address.<\/p>\n

The done thing is to add your Mastodon handle to your Twitter bio, then if your Twitter followers use something like Debirdify<\/a>, they can automagically find and import followers en mass.<\/p>\n
