{"id":4688,"date":"2023-01-23T21:05:13","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T21:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/?p=4688"},"modified":"2023-01-23T21:05:13","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T21:05:13","slug":"gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/?p=4688","title":{"rendered":"Gift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not going to overdo the &#8220;old goth music&#8221; thing, honest, but I felt that the re-release of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sisterhood_(gothic_rock_band)#Gift_album_(July_1986)\">Gift<\/a> was worth mentioning as I&#8217;d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/?p=4672\">waffled about <em>First and Last and Always<\/em><\/a> recently.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4690\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/images\/\/gift.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/images\/\/gift-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/images\/gift-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/images\/gift-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.piglet-net.net\/pigblog\/images\/gift.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The <i>Gift<\/i> cover. It&#8217;s black.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d fancied a copy of Gift for the last few years, but it hadn&#8217;t been produced for some time: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/master\/27987-The-Sisterhood-Gift\">last official release being in 1994, and a bootleg in 2009<\/a>&#8211; and copies were changing hands for far more than I was prepared to pay- rarity pushed prices up. The album is, after all, quite short, and is what amounts to a fast release to claim an advance (and probably upset Wayne Hussey).<\/p>\n<p>So it was nice to see Cadiz Music, a company that really need someone to look at their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cadizmusic.co.uk\">website<\/a> (Wix, FFS?), re-release it, for just over a tenner (prices seem volatile- just after I got it, it dropped to under \u00a39, but is currently selling for \u00a314)<\/p>\n<p>As it is: it&#8217;s an interesting point in between <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_and_Last_and_Always\">First and Last and Always<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Floodland_(album)\">Floodland<\/a><\/em>, and you know what? It&#8217;s not bad. <em>Colours<\/em> we&#8217;ve almost heard before, on CD releases of Floodland, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sisterhood_(gothic_rock_band)#%22Giving_Ground%22_single_(January_1986)\">Giving Ground<\/a><\/em> is obviously the single (even in this over 7-minute version with an obvious jump about 6:30 in) and given that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe reviews in the music press were unanimously negative\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>but I can&#8217;t help but agree with what Andrew Eldritch said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe Sisterhood album was a weapon in this corporate war. That&#8217;s why I called it Gift. [in German: poison] [&#8230;] But I still like the record. It&#8217;s weird but it&#8217;s fine. I see it as a techno record. Or what I thought to be techno at the time.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weird but fine does the job. Not to everyone&#8217;s taste, but an interesting snapshot and not a bad listen. I&#8217;d probably have been disappointed at \u00a360, but for a tenner I&#8217;m good.
