Windows ddin&#8217;t want to boot with it, but Linux was fine. Turned out that Windoze doesn&#8217;t like the new ATA\/66 writer on a bus with only a ATA\/33 cable. It should work fine, and did with a proper OS, but didn&#8217;t with XP.<\/p>\n<p>So I swapped it to the other controller, with an 80-pin cable connected. Because I was growing a little weary of all the tarting about, I didn&#8217;t disconnect the cables from the PC, and bent the usb connector, breaking it off the motherboard, which is now knackered.<\/p>\n<p>As it&#8217;s an old <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socket_a\">socket A<\/a> board, there&#8217;s not much choice. One, in fact, at my usual supplier, and it uses DDR rather than SDRAM memory, so one motherboard and 1GB of RAM later, I&#8217;ve learnt a lesson.
