My DVD writer was playing up, so I bought a new one. Windows ddin’t want to boot with it, but Linux was fine. Turned out that Windoze doesn’t like the new ATA\/66 writer on a bus with only a ATA\/33 cable. It should work fine, and did with a proper OS, but didn’t with XP.<\/p>\n
So I swapped it to the other controller, with an 80-pin cable connected. Because I was growing a little weary of all the tarting about, I didn’t disconnect the cables from the PC, and bent the usb connector, breaking it off the motherboard, which is now knackered.<\/p>\n
As it’s an old socket A<\/a> board, there’s not much choice. One, in fact, at my usual supplier, and it uses DDR rather than SDRAM memory, so one motherboard and 1GB of RAM later, I’ve learnt a lesson.
