This is a hotel, but scrapes in as it’s on the CAMRA Heritage Pubs site, not for the bar we drank in, but for
the Oak Bar, situated just inside the hotel on the left hand side
friendly staff. The inside is best described as “faded grandeur”: it’s lovely, stunning even, but really needs a sympathetic, light-touch restoration to bring it up to scratch as a hotel, as evidenced by Tripadvisor reviews. No cask ale, but we were drinking water anyway: the only time we managed to purchase sparkling water on our trip.

This was one of our favourite pubs of the trip. It didn’t have the full-on timewarp of Loggerheads, but it was nice and traditional inside. The beer choice was exemplary: Proper Job, Landlord, HPA and another. The barmaid was lovely, and judging by her t-shirt (Slipknot) may have influenced the music (rock, loud enough but not too loud). If only we employed more pub staff with decent music taste.
Good view of the street outside, nice-looking beer garden too.

This is a lovely CAMRA heritage pub, with a layout pretty much unchanged since before WW2, and still echoing a layout earlier than that. Multi-roomed, including one off-limits to women before 1975. Great beer, pleasant landlord, entertaining locals. An essential visit in Shrewsbury.

Traditional pub in the cobbled backstreets. Nice staff, decent beer (Banks’s IIRC), and pleasant lunch sat outside in the sunshine. A little bit pubco-identikit inside, so I’m told (I stayed outside), but lovely from the outside. It’s a hotel too: you can stay here.

It’s a ‘spoons. A very big spoons, right by the river, but a ‘spoons nonetheless. We dropped in for breakfast at a fraction of the cost of our hotel. Pleasant staff, no surprises.

Bit of a quandary here: first impressions were great: a good welcome, Oracle, Jaipur & Citra on the pumps, friendly staff who dealt with the one annoying drunk very quickly. Large covered-over courtyard at the rear where the music was more our taste: all good.
The next day, less so. Football on, and on loud, on the multitudes of TVs, blokes shouting over the TVs and standing in the way. Damn, I hate football in pubs.

We only sat outside here, but it’s a smart, modern re-doing of an old hotel/pub. It did have a few of the tropes that irrationally annoy me (prices listed as 6.0 instead of £6.00, and inconsistently, for example: trying to make something sound on-trend by shortening the name for another), but it was pleasant sat outside in the sun, the service was fine, the beer was fine, and the prices not ruinously expensive, even if the format was mangled. No cask ale, but decent craft bollocks from Camden, which was fine.

Bigger than expected, and historic-looking from the outside, but inside it’s pretty generic town-centre pub. No ale on offer when we visited. By no means an awful pub, but compared to others just a bit meh and unexceptional.

Lovely historic pub deep into the cobbled streets of Shrewsbury. Great beer, cobs on offer, historic surroundings, and just conversation as a soundtrack. Friendly landlady, too. Sadly the Timothy Taylor Landlord had just gone, but the alternative was fine.
