The Swan has closed, and re-opened under the ownership of Black Country Ales. In that way, there’s few surprises: the pub has been extensively refurbished, opened out, and serves great real ale and snacks/cobs. This is quite familiar and something the chain does well- most recently seen at The Uxbridge.

The refurb is really good, and the decor fits with this Victorian pub. The staff are friendly, the beer is great, there’s outdoor space, and generally, it’s just a great pub.

Grand National Day again, and another visit to The Tap and Tanner. No Walsall Beer Festival this time, and the pub has been refurbed, so it’s a bit smarter inside. Also, the staff were really pleasant this time.

The worst problem remains though, and that’s the noise. Multiple TVs showing sport, but on different channels, and huge PA-style speakers playing the sound from one. We found the only vacant seats, and discovered why they were vacant- right under the speakers, where we couldn’t hear each other. We did try the beer garden, which was nice, but when the sun went in it was too cold.

Beer was fine, prices fine, staff pleasant, but fuck, the noise. We left with headaches.

A revisit to a pub I already liked a lot, but it has now been taken over by Black Country Ales, extensively refurbished, and re-opened just a couple of days ago.

It’s lovely. The outside has been smartened up, the inside is fresh, clean, and firly bright, but still traditional. There’s the standard arrangement for Black Country pubs: TV screens displaying the huge choice of ales, cobs on offer, traditional decor.

Outside there’s a decent smoking shelter if that’s your thing, and a nice beer garden.

Beer was in excellent form, too. With the other 3 nice pubs nearby, there’s quite the making of a good pub crawl here.

It’s been 4 years sine we went here, and it’s changed a little.

The layout has changed a bit, it’s been decorated and refurbished. There’s two toilets now, not just a single one. The proprietor has settled in to the place and now seems entirely at ease: our first visit was very early on and he was getting to grips with it.

What hasn’t changed is that said proprietor is really friendly, the beer is still fantastic, the music is still present but not too loud.

It has continued table service after the lifting of Covid restrictions, and I feel this suits it well: the benefit of not having crowds around the bar.

Basically, it was great in 2017, and it’s even better now 🙂

My usual criteria for a revisit post is if something has changed appreciably, but that’s not the case here: it’s still a Greene King pub, it still serves decent, inexpensive food, and the staff are pleasant. The cask is in decent nick, which is nice, but it’s Greene King, which is less so, but it was my first pint of cask ale since November, so I’ll take that. There was decent lager for when I grew tired of GK.

It’s been a long time since we’ve been in here, but it’s not changed, covid precautions aside.

It’s still a great pub, there’s still great beer. The large function room at the back that belies the place’s origin as a club was open to increase space, and the place was busy on this last night before Lockdown II The Sequel.

The beers had changed, but a great selection. Great service, too.
