Harlech:
Not as imposing as the Castle Hotel, but nicer IMO. It’s a traditional pub in the town centre. The staff were very friendly, the beer good, and the food looked good too. It seems to cater for locals and tourists well.

The Corner Pin
York:
Wandered in here after the Railway Museum. Nice beer (Jennings) and a seperate restaurant- even though food is available in the bar it feels like a pub. Friendly staff and good prices too.
The Ackhorne

A pleasant backstreet pub. Decent beer (including Staropramen…Nom) with pleasant customers and staff. Nicely away from the main drag so not packed, but busy.
The Lamb and Lion Inn
York:
This really is an Inn, or hotel- you can stop there- but it feels like a pub. There’s lots of small rooms, which is nice, and some nice beer. The place was in fact rather nice overall, marred slightly by the prices and the miserable bastard of a barman.
The Three Tuns
York:
A very old-looking pub in the middle of town, with an alarming lean to the front window and the floor.
We only stopped for a quick pint, but it was pleasant enough- good choice of beer and pleasant staff.
Brigantes
York:
One of a small chain, this is a pub and brasserie, but the bias is towards the pub. Mixed clientele, excellent beer (both ale, belgian beer, and German lager), good food as well. The staff were friendly on all of our several visits too.

More ‘spoons than the nearby ‘spoons, this is part of the Great Value Pubs chain.
There’s just the usual suspects beerwise, loud TV and music (at the same time), and really nothing to reccomend. It wasn’t actually dreadful but there’s so much better nearby.
The Parish
York:
A converted church on Mickelgate. We had to visit: the phrase being ‘shall we go to church?.
Good points were the not ridiculous prices, and the conversion of the building, and the staff that were friendly despite their parents seemingly walking in.
Bad points: Loud music.
To be fair, it’s not aimed at 40 and 50 year old couples. If you’re 18-25, and single, you’ll probably love it.
The Punch Bowl
A ‘spoons in York:
This was a pub JDW took over, and it shows. It has all the normal JDW stuff: Good beer, cheap and OK food, but it has a bit more soul than the average ‘spoons house, and no career drinkers as well.
Hole in the Wall Hole I’ The Wa’
Dumfries:
Old town centre pub accessed via an alley off the main shopping street, reputedly getting it’s name from the fact that women were not allowed in, and were served through a hole in the wall.
In many ways a typical town pub- Karaoke nights, no ale, but much friendlier than it looked and pleasant enough.
