Now, if you were after a village pub, this fits. 16th century, low ceilings (I had to duck!), wooden beams. Decent beer and wine, friendly staff and locals, traditional feel.

The Old Barn Freehouse
Felpham, West Sussex:
We didn’t take to this: nothing actually wrong, but it felt a bit sports bar-ish. Outside was OK though, but less attractive than others nearby. Beer was fine, staff OK too, it just didn’t have the village pub feel we got elsewhere in Felpham.
The Thatched House
Felpham, West Sussex:
Pleasant village pub. looked to be recently refurbed inside, but not devoid of character. Nice decking area out back- looking out to a car prk, but pleasant enough. Great beer and friendly staff. Another pub with rooms, and they seemed to be preparing a holiday let attached to the pub too.
The Fox Inn
Felpham, West Sussex:
Lovely traditional pub just a short walk from the seafront. Loads of outside space, but we were sunburned so sat inside. Traditional interior- traditional for when the pub was rebuilt post WW2 (apparently the first newly-built post-war pub). Lovely staff, great beer and food.
The Lamb Inn
Pagham (or maybe Nyetimber), West Sussex:
Imposing old pub (coaching inn?). Traditional inside, friendly staff, great beer choice and an excellent-looking menu (we had already eaten). Lovely beer garden too, and a bus top right outside.
The Bear Inn
Pagham, West Sussex:
At a guess, 1920s, this was definitely pub with rooms, not pubby hotel. Pleasant barman and staff, and a decent beer garden. There was ale, but it was all a bit traditional bitter for me, so keg Ghost Ship (which was fine).
The Inglenook
Pagham, West Sussex:
Another hotel, another pubby hotel! Inside feels like a country pub, outside looks like one.
Fabulous beer garden, great beer choice, some craft bollocks and some cask, both fine, and great food. Really pleasant staff again too.
The Claremont
Bognor Regis, West Sussex:
Traditional-looking pub just a short way back from the front, near to an ex-pub now homing the Bognor Regis Museum– where we found that The Claremont is rumoured to be haunted.
Inside, it’s been modernised, but it’s not stripped all the character from it, and it’s clean and smart. There wass cask ale, but I missed it and had posh lager instead. We were hoping for food, but they don’t currently do that midweek. Staff were really friendly and pleasant.
The Regis
Bognor Regis, West Sussex:
A Brewer’s Fayre right on the seafront, and presumably trading on position alone.
I’ll start with the good: the staff were pleasant.
Nothing much else was: the solitary ale was Doom Bar. The place felt a little grubby throughout, and things were tatty- the fireplace with bricks missing, for a start. The pinnacle though, were the toilets: there was a notice saying they were regularly checked: presumably to check they were filthy enough: apparently the ladies was strewn with toilet paper, and had one broken seat and one broken door lock. The gents had every urinal bagged over, and no bog roll in one of the two cubicles.
While I’ve seen toilets as bad elsewhere, and kind of like tatty pubs, I’d expect the trade-off for a family feedbag to be that if the drinks choice is a bit crap and there’s no atmosphere, at least the place is clean….
The Waverley
Bognor Regis:
Seafront pub. A look at the coherent Google reviews (click the map) will tell you most you need to know: it was Ok when we visited but I guess it could be a bit “vibrant” at times. Staff friendly enough, lots of outside space, but drinks prices a bit high.
