More Teefies

Our furry children had a checkup back in July, and unsurprisingly the boy needed his teeth looking at. Considering his sister is now toothless, he got away a little more lightly, he still has a few teeth, just not many.

Discussions with the vet at the checkup said that we should look at it “between now and Christmas”, so we took him in at 9 last Thursday. A few checks and we left our chomky 6.1kg boy behind.

His sister wasn’t happy, even when she did get her breakfast (late, when we got back), clearly wondering where he was.

We collected him late afternoon, looking very slightly wobbly, and he came home, had some food, and settled down for a nap, later that night snoozing in his mom’s arms.

His recovery went well, and today we took him back for a checkup, and all was well, except perhaps for the waiting room experience: a few people with very noisy, uncontrolled dogs were stressing us and the boy- why, FFS, would you seat yourself and a noisy, barely controlled dog next to a couple with a cat carrier in an otherwise empty room?, so my dear better half took the boy outside while we waited. When we were called in, the poor lad didn’t want to come out of the carrier, but once out he was checked over and given a clean bill of health. Back home to his food and cat bed 🙂

Teefies

Poor Fanty has been in the wars, she’s just passed her 3rd cativersary with us, and needed dental work in 2022, and now is no longer in possession of any teeth after a further visit 🙁

Her last check had warned ominously of this, but “if she seems OK and is eating that’s probably OK”, but then she’d started drooling a lot, and had got smelly breath.

A visit to the vet confirmed all was not well and she was booked in for the next day, and we were at first upset to learn she was now toothless, but the return home changed our minds: she’s clearly happier and brighter and is eating normally. Poor Fanty: 6 is young to be toothless (Mr Catface reached 16-17), but it was clearly very uncomfortable for her.

Winter Sun

We did our winter sun thing again, and again, like last time going wasn’t a certainty, but go we did, with a hefty additional sum to the travel insurance people and some help from assisted travel- more of that soon.

The journey out was delayed at take-off and featured an aborted landing attempt, but eventually we found ourselves at our hotel in Playa Blanca.

We’ve visited the resort twice before (well, in fact my better half has been one more time on top of that), so it was quite familiar stuff, even if negotiating the Marina’s nooks and crannies is challenging in the dark. Still, we found food and drink.

Of the assisted travel: my mobility isn’t great and hasn’t been for some time, and last year was very hard work at security at BHX, even using the express lane. My other half has recently had health issues too, and the recent security changes, best described as “a shitshow”, meant that we asked for help.

In practice this worked well enough, but like everything else at BHX, had an air of disorganisation, chaos, and “this is too complex”. Honestly- just how does BHX manage to be this shit? Areciffe airport was maybe a little chaotic, but by comparison, worked like a well-oiled machine.

Anyway, back to Playa Blanca.

We found cats. No great challenge, and between the tourists and the locals that know the tourists, the cats are cared for: the seafront area features multiple cat houses/feeding stations.

One of us cuddled a kitten, that’s how used to people the cats are:

There’s not just cats, of course. An impressive promenade, bars, restaurants, shops if that’s your thing.

We walked a little, slooowly, and much less that in 2008 (and a bit less than 2019, I think). One of us chose to go flying behind a boat (clue: that wasn’t me), we swam a bit.

There were a few pubs.

Catalogue of Errors

You might have noticed that I quite like pubs and that I also quite like cats.

I also quite like Black Country Ales, the local pubco that do a fantastic job of traditional, real-ale biased pubs that are the kind of place I like to drink.

Which made this story all the more disappointing:

Report from the BBC here

Blog from The Sandwell Skidder here

The Wellington is one of the older BCA pubs and something of an institution, with the typically 16 handpumps, the TV screens that display beer, not sport, and the pubcats.

Previously, there was Welly, the pubcat, now there’s Malt and Hops– but basically, there is a long, long tradition of cats at The Wellington.

The reason for their proposed eviction isn’t clear, but there is speculation that it relates to this review:

It is unclear what possession belonging to cats the pub is for 😉 , or is that just me being a grammar nazi?

Black Country Ales aren’t commenting, or responding to emails, and it’s now right across social media, the news, and the web. It’s not a good look lads, the Internet loves cats. Lots of pub goers love cats, and it’s not unknown for cats to be a prominent feature.

From Black Country Ales’ Facebook:

We at Black Country Ales would like to thank all who have expressed interest regarding the rehoming of The Wellington’s cats, Malt and Hops. We assure everyone that the welfare of the cats is uppermost in our own thinking, and that of the licensee whom we met today and who is in agreement with the plan.
In readiness for an extensive refurbishment and correction of significant building issues, the cats will be permanently rehomed in a safer and more fitting environment. Whilst we understand that many people enjoy the independent nature of cats, which do exactly as they please, it does mean that their confinement indoors has raised challenges in maintaining good hygiene and tidiness. And, of course, many people do not want the unsolicited company of a cat with their pint or sandwich.
We hope that this clarifies what will be happening at the pub and reassures everyone of our commitment to a happy and safe rehoming for Malt and Hops, and a comfortable, newly renovated pub for all our customers.

The post originally read like this, as can be seen in the edit history:

The licensee’s original three kittens arrived during Covid, and after the sad death of one of them outside the pub, the remaining two have since been confined indoors 24/7. This is untrue. The cats were present in 2019- my blog linked above mentions them, and other Facebook posters state that the third kitten, Chip, lived happily at The Woodman until its closure and is alive and well.

Cativersary

A year ago today, we welcomed our new furry friends into our home. We rehomed them from a local couple whose changed circumstances meant they were finding giving them the home they deserved hard. We hadn’t expected to return home with cats right away, thinking we were just checking them out (and being checked out), but no, we returned home with kittehs after a tearful farewell from their old dad.

They took even longer to settle than Kitty & QT, with Mingo, the boy, emerging first, although we had him and Fanty confused for a long time, because they look so similar and the collection had been a bit confusing.

They’re now fully settled, though we still have to teach Mingo to use the catflap so he can explore: his sister has it nailed and comes and goes as she pleases.

N-n-n-n Nineteen

[80s hit reference no-one under 40 will get]

This blog is reaching nineteen. Nineteen years of this shite. Not quite there yet, as I’m starting writing this slightly before Christmas 2022, as I find myself with nothing else to do and bored of doomscrolling social media.

So, what has 2022 brought us? No human deaths in the immediate family [*crosses fingers and hopes not to have to edit this section in the closing hours of 2022*], which is an improvement over 2020 and 2021, but 2 catty friend deaths in very close succession, which definitely isn’t.

The country, if anything, is actually in a worse position. We’ve had a continuing succession of ineptitude and evil which has hit new lows, to the degree that people were looking back at the Thatcher years if not with longing, at least with a grim appreciation that just when you thought you’d seen the worst, someone says “hold my Cristal” and plumbs new depths. Enough of that. We all know where the blame lies and I’m so very tired of it. We can’t afford to pay public sector workers, but we can afford to pay minister’s mates billions for stuff that doesn’t work. I’m so glad we took back control and ended corruption.

I continue to feel and look old, but I’m hopeful that at least I’m not acting like an old gammon, despite appearances very much to the contrary.

My gloomy prediction of

We’ll all get older and our health will deteriorate at best

in 2021 looks like being accurate, though that hardly takes Mystic fucking Meg, does it?.

In better news, I did at least get the surgery I could have done with some years ago, and it has given me a definite improvement. I’m still fucked, of course, but while being so, there’s considerably less pain and I may be able to exercise a bit more again.

In catty better news, we got new furry friends, and they’re now fully settled, even if only one of them uses the cat flap, so we get furry company and they get a warm, comfortable, loving home. I get awakened by a furry creature parading over me as daylight appears. Thankfully, at this miserable time of year, that’s relatively late.

While the country continues to be a selfish, isolationist, racist shithole run for the benefit of a very few, there are still good people: many of them are currently striking and deserve our support. Maybe we can redress the balance next year, eh? While the outlook in so many ways is bleak, we can have hope: there is a society, despite what Thatcher said years ago. There are good people in the world, and I’m lucky enough to count some of them as friends.

Covid is still present, of course, but now vaccines are common and it is better understood, for many people it’s just unpleasant, rather than life-threatening. In terms of news, it’s kept very low-key these days. We managed to contract it during the summer, and while it was pretty unpleasant, we appear to have recovered, but the very real fact is that others have not.

Sitting writing this (it’s now December 30, now I’ve got this far), I’m certainly not overly positive about 2023, and I don’t think that’s an unreasonable view, unless you’re deluding yourself. We can but hope for some good, maybe grab your finest black clothing and a copy of First and Last and Always and a bottle of your choice of spirits, stay up past midnight to ensure twenty fucking twenty two has gone, and give 2023 the sort of look that it fucking well deserves as a warning.

The Queen is Dead

When I woke up on April 4 thoroughly fed up and still in pain from digging one cat grave, I really wasn’t expecting to have to repeat the experience so soon.

I’d got up for work as usual, and was wearily dealing with whatever the day was throwing my way. My dear better half got up:

“have you seen Kitty?”

Well, I hadn’t. This was unusual, there was an established routine of cat treats in the morning before both cats found somewhwere to snooze. Off for a search of the likely spots: the cupboard over the stairs, inside wardrobes, under the beds.

Which is where I found her, unmoving and stiff.

So the garden gets dug up again, and our remaining baby is put to rest next to her brother (and near to Meowth).

Sleep well baby. We gave you both a good life and you were taken too soon.

Kitty Softpaws: 28 Aug 2009 – 4 April 2022

The King Is Dead

I came home this morning (just about this morning) to QT apparently snoozing on a chair: the friend I was with peeked under the blind before continuing home and remarked on him comfortably asleep.

Except he wasn’t. I didn’t notice until he didn’t move for Dreamies.

As the same friend said: “He lived like a king”, which is pretty accurate: in comfort, waited upon, and indulged. It’s never easy saying goodbye to a loved pet, but it’s an inescapable fact that we will have to, and it’s the price we pay for their companionship, and all we can wish for is that we gave them a good life, which I’m certain we did.

Sleep well, lad.

QT McWhiskers: 28 Aug 2009 – 3 April 2022

Cat Superhighway

I got a trailcam for Christmas. The first outing of it there was so much mist and fog the footage wasn’t usable, but a second try, cable-tied to a garden fork got something. The HD video takes a long time to splice together and process.

As can be seen, there’s a lot of cats around here! 2 are, of course, Kitty & QT, but there’s numerous others, most of which I’ve never seen before, and also it seems Brandon Lee’s crow comes for a snack.

Foxeh drops by, but I think the hedgehogs are safely in hibernation, maybe.

Feline Rough

Things started to look not right on Sunday: QT McWhiskers, my boy cat, walked away leaving tuna uneaten. After this epsiode, both cats have successfully convinced me that it is their birthright to have tuna every day, and, given the chance, QT will happily guzzle it all.

on Monday, we were more concerned. QT is lazy, so a certain amount of not moving and sleeping on a bed is normal, especially as he’s now getting on, but a whole night and following day of not moving, not coming for Dreamies, and generally looking miserable convinced us something was wrong, so first thing on Tuesday, the vets were called and he got booked in.

In the meantime, my dear better half noticed what looked like blood around his neck, and all was revealed when we got to the vets (after an unfortunate cat piss on the bed incident, fortunately caught quickly, so only a duvet had to get thrown) and the boy has a large abscess on his neck, where I’d thought I’d seen a bit of swelling and then discounted as just fur- which has expanded overnight. He’s got a temperature too, so this is obviously making him feel off.

Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs later, we get him back home, and now, by evening he’s a bit more lively. No idea what happened, I can only guess a fight.
