I’ve long held the view that configuring network devices is something that should be done the one true way: A CLI. However, my 1337 h4x0r skills are not strong enough that I knew where to start with the router that’s been sitting unused for a while, given that my home network is more complex than some.

So, having upgraded the flash a few days ago (and TFTPd a upgraded version of IOS onto the new flash card), given the shite weather today I got out Cisco SDM and had a crack with that. It’s not at all bad: It’s kind of like using a GUI HTML editor- it spits out lines of code to the router that (if you choose) you can tidy up later. I’ve had it write me the bits I don’t understand how to do, so now I have some light reading: for those of you that don’t know, Cisco gear is configured by lines of text, rather like a *nix configuration file. Here‘s an example of a simple one.

To make up for it I did do the wordpress upgrade (below) entirely by shell prompt. Does that make me still 1337?

Just to show I haven’t spent all day in a dark room in front of a PC (or 3), I did get out on my bike today, for the first time in ages, and avoided too much of the rain.
