Sorry, but things seems to have gone a bit wrong!. Apache seemed to die at some point, and being lazy, I just did a ‘shutdown -i6 now’ from work.

Then it didn’t come back up. The horrid prompt ‘enter root password for maintenance, or ctrl-D for normal startup.

No it isn’t. It was a stck of duff RAM. I’ve taken out 256MB of Ram (=2 sticks) and re-run memtest, and all seems good. I’d take it back, but I got it with the PC for nothing…..)

a) The power failures recently upset the disk a bit, and it’s now passed the fsck interval and done a check that failed.

or

b) The dodgy fujitsu hard drive (yes, one of those!) is going duff.

I’ve now taken it back down again for a quick backup :-).

My new toy is a D-Link DCS900 network camera, which I’ve finally played with tonight. It’s not in action permanently yet due to the lack of power sockets here in the ‘spare’ room. I was considering the scary idea of chaining a 4 way block off the existing 12 way one (some of the plugs are power brick type things that block some of the sockets), but the thought made the electrical engineer within me want to weep, so I didn’t. Watch this space!
It’s not helped by the fact I bought a US camera as it was cheaper (a lot cheaper…). UI had hoped the PSU would be a multi-voltage one (so many are 100-240V now), but it wasn’t to be: I have a 240-120 stepdown transformerto house too, as I’m too lazy to make a 240V PSU for it.
