What a disaster! 36000 cans of lager have been seized by HMRC in Wolverhampton and will now be destroyed, presumably.
Seriously, there’s one thing that really troubles me about this sort of operation: The goods are seized and then destroyed- that’s the disaster. The same with fags, or untaxed cars.
Why can these items not be sold at market value and the money returned to the public purse?

But the standard debt recovery auctions could be used to sell small, controlled lots to the public.

Fake clothes are often taken to the third world as Lee says. Foodstuffs and fags, however, are a different manner. They could be fake, tampered with or clean, but they’ve lost traceability so they’ll be destroyed for that reason I’d imagine. I can well understand the risk of reintroducing stuff like that to the retail chain.
The stuff about crushing cars is haddock – they say they do it, but it’s just for publicity. If it’s saleable, it’s sold…
