Crap Town?

We spent the weekend in and around Morecambe. I actually like the town. It isn’t as run down as it was, but it’s still a bit rough round the edges. The Midland Hotel is more dilapidated than ever (I’ve written about this before), and the Winter Gardens no better, despite a campaign to save both.

What really was a surprise was finding a semi-good hotel and lots of good pubs, though it must be said as I get older I’ve become a hotel snob and pub anti-snob: I like my hotels with lots of comfort, a bar, decent surroundings and facilities, and i like my pubs a bit……well, nothing involving posers.

So anyway, our time up north consisted of a shitty drive up, and a nice hotel near Lancaster (playing it safe!), then search Morecambe for something acceptable for Saturday night, bemoan the state of the Midland again, see if the Winter Gardens tours were on (they weren’t), happen accross a Really cool old fire station near our hotel (up for sale! Ghostbusters anyone?), go for a walk and do a cool geocache, drink beer, eat really good chinese food, drink more beer in some proper pubs with absolutely no posing tossers in,, sleep, eat breakfast, two more geocaches, drive home. Not bad really.

The reason, incidentally for the title is the fact that The Idler rated it at number 2 of crap towns. The Crap Towns books are funny, but very often wrong.
