Last night’s journey home was a nightmare: the sudden snowfall and resultant gridlock made a journey from the Lickey Hills took 4 hours. A combination of gritters being out too late, a very hard snowfall, and the inability of some to drive on snow made the drive tiresome.
One thing for sure: wide, high performance tyres on a small car are not a good combination: having said that, the Stymistress only had to push once up a hill in Rubery Village.
Having made the observation that many people can’t drive in snow, I tried to find a good guide, but disagree with some. This one doesn’t seem bad. For a start, the one bit of advice I’ve never found helpful is ‘use a high gear to pull away’. IMO, it lessens the control you have, as the wheels spin faster. I’ve always found the best advice is use low gear, but no throttle- first gear downhill on a closed throttle keeps the car under control easier than braking. The other vaild point from elsewhere:

The 4WD activity day I did a while ago came in useful for learning how a car behaves on very slippy surfaces, and how to deal with it.
Twas hilarious watching the posh gits in Sutton getting stuck in their rear wheel drive Beemers and mercs and then zipping round them in my Datsun.
Still took four and a half hours to get home. 🙁
Looks like the councils stood back and were still admiring their stirling work of the day before as they never bothered in Wolverhampton! I saw 1 gritter and he was stuck in traffic! Took 5 Pints four hours to get back from Birmingham! never even made it to the pub!
Never mind, it won’t snow again this year……..I think!
