As I’ve just finished reading ‘Masters of Doom’ (about, unsurprisingly, Doom- my favourite computer game), I thought I’d drag out my Doom CDs.
First attempt was Doom for win95, but on 2k. OK-ish, but the mouse didn’t work.
2nd attempt was DOS Doom on a bootable CD, again OK, but no sound (I didn’t set up the sound first!). I might try this again, just for a laugh.
Then I discovered zdoom, which is a genuine win32 port of doom, but with much improved stuff for todays hardware. Well Cool. You’ll need a copy of the original doom WAD to use it, but it’s free, and was lightning fast on my Athon 1.2Ghz PC with a basic Nvidia card, and with an (unheard of for doom) 1152 x 864 resolution.
Zdoom is one of many ports/revisions of doom. There’s some for linux too, where it’s possible to run several copies in sepearte windows on the same machine.
