We’ve been down to London for a few days: We’d been meaning to for a while. We went to the Tate Modern: primarily to see the building, but also to have a look at the bloody great big crack in the floor, and point, laugh, and make philistine comments about it in general. What a load of shite. The building is lovely though.
We also had a look around the Imperial War Museum, the British Museum, and had a look around Tower Bridge. We also did zero shopping, which was nice, met up with friends, and ate and drank without a hangover.
We stayed in the Mad Hatter Hotel, which was, overall, very good. For a start, it’s bar is a proper, traditional pub. It’s close to the tube, and, for London, reassonably priced.
I envy your visit to the Imperial War Museum and the British Museum (is that the V&A?). My daughter visited the War Museum a couple of weeks back with her school.
I’m presuming you used the train, was it expensive?
I understand expense is relative. What I really mean is, how much did getting there cost?
I worked down the smoke on and off for 7 years so I generally hate the place, but I’m winding myself up for a trip to the IWM and the Cabinet War Rooms. I used to stay near the Cutty Sark but never made it around the Maritime museum. Might be an excuse to go over Christmas……

The train cost about 53 quid IIRC from Bham International- stymistress paid. Not too bad, I thought. Parking is a bit steep there though, but if you wanted you could get a train from Walsall to International. You’re not likely to get me driving into central London- wouldn’t know where I was going, the traffic is terrible, the parking lousy. By comparison Virgin Trains & the tube is fine.
The V&A and the British Museum are separate- we’ve been to the V&A a few years back. Free as well 🙂
It was £57.80 return for the two us us. You can get it as cheap as £40 if you book well in advance and are flexable on dates.

I was down that way myself last week (business unfortunatley), there is a quirky pub call the Blackfriar not far from the north end of blackfriars bridge, worth a visit, not the sort of place you expect to find in london
Did you venture accross the “wobbley bridge”. On the other side of this bridge from the tate modern there is an ugly, 3 storey, modular looking building. A classic example of what sucks about 1980’s public sector architechture. I spent 2 years working in that building, I was seriously happy to escape.
