Why is it that if you call to (for example) confirm safe receipt of a credit card, or to finalise a loan application, or other trivial matter, the damned call centre knob phone jockey has to try to sell you something you don’t want?
I don’t like being rude to the people, but when the script starts, I have now decided just to pre-empt it. Hence today:
“If you are trying to sell me [shonky overpriced insurance scheme] then don’t bother.”
“We just want to inform our customers.”
Well, I’m sure you do. But guess what? I already know said shonky product exists. Now stop wasting my time.
In a similar theme, just as soon as I’ve budgeted for this little item I’ll be sending for it pronto:

Great suggestion Hoipoloi! I’ll be getting one as well!
Coincidentally I had a letter from the bank today. “We’ve noticed that the phone number we hold for you is registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) which means that we cannot call you about upgrading your account, or other products and special offers that could benefit you financially.” blah blah blah “We promise not to call you about everything – only if we think it could be appropriate and relevant to you”. It goes on a bit more then at the bottom is a tear-off slip that they would like me to sign and return so that they are allowed to phone me.
I couldn’t stop smiling. If there was any confirmation that the TPS works then this is it. Terrific.
Oh, that is *sweet*.
Incidentally, I’ve just read about the truecall in Computer Weekly. It seems it’s a whitelisting device- sounds interesting.
I’ll look out for letters from my bank as well!
