As an update to this post, I got a replacement copy, which was much better, and plays reliably. I’d always expected CD to be a work-or-nothing medium, but I can only speculate that the error-correction trying to make the duff disc playable made it sound horrible. Nice really, when you consider some copy protected CDs

I wouldn’t know as the last time I bought a CD you could still buy vinyl 😉
So how do you get music? Please tell me not MP3 dodgy nasty-sounding compressed download?
I get music from mainly bit torrent but there are lossless techniques out there, notably flac (http://flac.sourceforge.net/)
