i finally saw Blueyonder PCGuard in action. You might remember my distinct lack of enthusiasm for it a while back, and now, having seen it cripple a moderately powerful laptop into an unusable state, I see I was right. It’s bloatware, and more resource-hungry than the spyware it’s supposed to guard against.

My Mum had something similar from NTL on her PC, it forced you to dial through their software but it ate half the physical RAM and made the computer run like a dog! Fortunately you could close the app after connecting and choose not to disconnect the connection, then the PC came back to life.
This PC was, i thought, spywared up to the hilt. I did the usual check in the registry HKLM\blah…blah\Run, and found nothing that really stood out, then checked the task manager.
20% of cpu was running this monstrosity. With that and things like Limewire & a dozen ‘helper’ system tray apps, it took about 15 minutes to start….Removing the key for PCGuard made a dramatic difference. Really though, it was an old copy of XP with too much tat and a bloated registry that needed formatting, but removing PCG made it useable again.
